New Georgia E-verify Requirement Starting Jan. 1

Starting on January 1, 2012, Georgia businesses with 500 or more employees will be required to use E-verify.  This site checks the status of workers to make sure that they are authorized to work in this country.

The schedule for the phase-in for using E-verify is:

Jan 1, 2012: Businesses with 500 or more employees

July 1, 2012: Businesses with 100 or more employees

Jan 1, 2013: Businesses with more than 10 employees

Businesses with 10 or fewer employees are exempt.

Participation will be enforced by the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts by taking random audits of businesses.  Employers will be required to test all new employees, including temporary workers.

Here is a helpful enrollment checklist to make sure that you have everything you need to enroll in E-verify.
